The Heart of Hospice:

Origins of Volunteer Hospice in Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties 1978-1989

More than thirty-five years ago, a small group of church volunteers met in a living room in Burlington, VT committed to improving the way end-of-life care was delivered.  As a result, they helped to change the face of dying in our communities.  The Heart of Hospice: Origins of Volunteer Hospice in Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties 1978-1989 provides a narrative history of the grassroots movement that transformed the volunteer component of hospice care from private meetings to its vital role in the VNA Hospice program.

The production of this book was spearheaded by Pamela MacPherson, a former Hospice Volunteer Coordinator with this program, working with a team of local publishing students from Champlain College.  The students were responsible for writing, editing and publishing the final printed works.  It is released in a limited short run hardcover edition for the VNA, local libraries and contributors.

You matter because you are you.

You matter to the last moment of your life,

And we will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully,

But also to live until you die.
